Flies: Iron Blue Dun

THE IRON BLUE DUN. By Seamus Donnelly

Iron Blue Dun

The iron blue dun was one of the first flies I was introduced to when I started fishing.

To the complete novice mad keen to gain as much information as quick as possible, the only man who I could connect to the river moyola was Harold Hueston of Huestons Castledawson.

Harold set out a tray of flies of different colours. They were all well tied but I didn’t no the difference between a bann special and a blue winged olive.

So when quizzed about which fly would work best on the river, Harold reached down and produced a well worn book from behind a glass display unit. He flicked open the book to the “iron blue dun” page.

Here he had scribbled on beside the iron blue photo, what months the fly works best.

“Joey o’neill and wee Tommy Maguire swear by this fly” he told me. So if it’s good enough for those boys then its good enough for me.

Iron Blue Family

The 'Little Watchett'
This was the start of a love affair with the iron blue dun. Since then I have investigated the iron blue family which has a daddy (the iron blue dun size 12).
A mummy (the snipe and purple size 12-14) and a baby (the dark watchet size 16-18). All fish well through April to the end of the season

The 'Snipe Purple'I would fish any of these flies on the top dropper with a heavy nymph on the point.

It can be fished upstream or down wet or dry. A truly magical fly

Try it yourself. It has saved me on countless occasions and I’m not even sure if I’ve ever seen the natural fly on the river.
